Management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has dismissed reports circulating on social media suggesting that recent alleged sexual assault incidents involving students occurred on its campus, describing the claims as misleading.
In a statement issued by its management, the university clarified that the alleged incidents did not take place within the KNUST campus but rather occurred in the nearby community of Ayeduase.
As such, the university noted that the matter falls outside the jurisdiction of its internal security operations.
KNUST further stated that the suspect linked to the incidents is not a member of the university’s security services.
According to the statement, the individual is a private security guard employed by a local institution in the Ayeduase area and has no affiliation with the university’s official security system.
The university indicated that both cases have been formally reported to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service in Kumasi and are currently being handled by the appropriate authorities.
The suspect, it added, remains in police custody while the matter is before the court.
While acknowledging the seriousness of the allegations, KNUST expressed concern for the victims and confirmed that they have received initial counselling support from DOVVSU.
The university also noted that its Counselling Centre has initiated contact with the victims to provide additional psychological and medical assistance.
Management reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and well-being of students and pledged continued collaboration with relevant authorities to ensure justice is served.
The university also urged media organisations to verify information with its University Relations Office before publication to prevent the spread of inaccurate or misleading reports.
