The Bank of Ghana has directed Mobile Money Fintech Limited (MMFL) to suspend the planned introduction of charges on direct transfers from mobile wallets to bank accounts.
In a press release issued on 26 May 2026, the central bank said the proposed 0.75% fee, which was scheduled to take effect on 1 June 2026, had been put on hold to allow for further consultation.
“The Bank of Ghana informs the public that Mobile Money Fintech Limited (MMFL) has been directed to pause the implementation of its proposed 0.75 percent fee on direct wallet-to-bank transfers,” the statement said.
The fee proposal had earlier been announced to customers of MTN Mobile Money and was expected to apply to transfers from MoMo wallets to bank accounts, with charges capped at GH₵5 per transaction.
The announcement had generated public discussion over the potential impact on digital financial transactions and mobile money users.
According to the Bank of Ghana, the suspension forms part of efforts to ensure fairness in the mobile financial services sector and to protect consumers.
“This decision reflects our commitment to ensuring that any changes to charges in the mobile financial services ecosystem are introduced fairly, protect consumers, and support their financial wellbeing,” the statement added.
The central bank did not indicate when consultations would be concluded or whether the proposed charges would eventually be implemented.
