The Ministry of Education has launched the National Schools Awards (GALOP Edition), an initiative aimed at recognising public schools in underserved communities that have demonstrated significant improvement under the Ghana Accountability for Learning Outcomes Project (GALOP).
Speaking at the launch in Accra on Wednesday, Deputy Minister for Education and Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, welcomed the introduction of the awards, describing it as an important step towards promoting excellence and improving learning outcomes in Ghana’s education sector.
He said the awards would recognise and reward public schools that have recorded remarkable progress through GALOP interventions and commended the National Schools Inspectorate Authority (NaSIA) for its commitment to maintaining quality standards in schools despite operational challenges.
Inspector-General of Schools, Prof. Tahiru Salifu Azeko, said the maiden edition of the awards is being piloted among underserved public schools benefiting from GALOP. He noted that future editions would be be expanded to include private schools to make the awards more inclusive.
Prof. Azeko expressed appreciation to the World Bank for supporting the initiative and acknowledged the contributions of the Ministry of Education, development partners and other education sector agencies. He said the awards are expected to encourage schools nationwide to pursue continuous improvement and uphold high standards in teaching and learning.
According to the organisers, the National Schools Awards form part of NaSIA’s efforts to strengthen accountability, promote excellence and improve quality in Ghana’s pre-tertiary education system.
The launch was attended by heads of education sector agencies, representatives of the Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS), and officials from the World Bank.
