An anonymous donor has paid the full GH¢80,000 required for the brain tumour surgery of five-year-old Joycelyn Amoako, following a public appeal for financial assistance to save her life.
The money was handed over to the management of EIB Network (GHOne TV) today, just three (3) days after Isaac Justice Bediako, the network’s Ashanti Regional Correspondent, highlighted the plight of Joycelyn and her parents and their struggle to raise the amount needed for her treatment.
EIB Network has since contacted Joycelyn’s parents and asked them to come for the money to facilitate the child’s surgery immediately.
Joycelyn, who was born on January 15, 2021, is from Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region and has been diagnosed with a posterior fossa tumour requiring urgent neurosurgery at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.
Her father, Philip Amoako, said medical examinations, including an MRI scan, confirmed the presence of the tumour and the need for specialised procedures to prevent further complications.
The family had already managed to finance an initial procedure after doctors discovered that the tumour was obstructing the flow of fluid within Joycelyn’s brain, causing fluid to accumulate.
Doctors subsequently inserted a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt to drain the excess fluid from her brain into her abdomen.
“Thanks be to God, we have been able to afford that procedure,” Mr. Amoako said.
However, the more critical procedure — the removal of the main tumour from Joycelyn’s brain through a craniotomy and tumour excision — remained outstanding due to the family’s inability to raise the required funds.
The estimated cost of Joycelyn’s pre- and post-operative care was GH¢80,000.
The anonymous donation has now covered the full amount, bringing relief to the family and paving the way for Joycelyn to proceed with the urgently needed treatment.
The latest development comes after the family appealed to individuals, charitable organisations, churches, businesses and the general public for support as they raced against time to secure funds for their daughter’s surgery.
Further updates on Joycelyn’s treatment are expected as arrangements are made for the surgery.
