Ashanti Regional NDC Chairman Augustus Andrews Nana Kwasi has called on Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor to urgently reshuffle engineers in the region, accusing some appointees from the previous administration of sabotaging government efforts amid ongoing power disruptions.
In an interview Kojo Marfo on the DayBreak morning show at Fakye TV monitored by Kumasimail, Nana Kwasi insisted there is no return to “dumsor”, Ghana’s infamous power crisis but blamed lax engineers for preventable outages.
He targeted officials brought in by former Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO.
“There’s no dumsor! If there are challenges, the engineers must let us know,” Kwasi declared.
“I am not mincing words: if the Energy Minister is listening, the majority of the engineers NAPO brought into the region must be shaken up, or they will disgrace us,” he firmly stated.
Nana Kwasi recounted a recent incident last week in an unnamed district, where residents complained of persistent blackouts.
He contacted the District Chief Executive (DCE), who confirmed the issue but claimed helplessness. Putting the district engineer on the line, Kwasi confronted him directly.
“I questioned him, fought with him, and threatened that if he didn’t take care, I’d ensure he’s transferred,” Kwasi said. “Within five minutes, the people started calling saying the lights had come on.”
He described such cases as evidence of engineers “sleeping on the job,” urging a firm response.
“We’ve been told some transformers are weak and need changing, but there’s no dumsor,” he added.
Pressed by the host on whether these engineers were deliberately sabotaging the NDC government, Nana Kwasi stood firm stating “I’m telling you what happened in my presence. I called the MMDCE to put the engineer on the line, and within five minutes, the light came.”
The Energy Minister has previously dismissed dumsor fears, assuring the public of sufficient fuel and resources.
However, Chairman Nana Kwasi warned that without action, disruptions would persist. “The engineers from the NAPO era in the Ashanti Region – if we don’t change most of them, this thing will continue,” he stated.
