President John Dramani Mahama has launched Ghana’s new electronic visa (e-Visa) portal, describing it as a major step towards modernising the country’s immigration system and improving travel facilitation through technology.
The platform is expected to streamline visa applications by making the process faster and more accessible, while maintaining strict security checks and due diligence procedures in line with national security requirements.
Speaking at the launch ceremony in Accra, President Mahama also announced visa fee waivers for all African passport holders travelling to Ghana for business or tourism. He said the move reflects Ghana’s commitment to continental integration and openness.

“We want Ghana to remain a welcoming destination for Africans and a centre for mobility across the continent,” the President said.
He noted that the reforms form part of a broader government strategy to leverage technology to improve governance, strengthen border management and enhance national security.
President Mahama said outdated systems could no longer define Ghana’s engagement with the world, stressing that digital transformation was essential to improving efficiency and competitiveness.
The President also outlined ongoing improvements at Ghana’s international airports aimed at enhancing passenger experience and reducing delays during security screening.

According to him, new 3D scanning systems are being installed at Terminals 2 and 3, which will allow passengers to keep laptops and liquids inside their hand luggage during checks.
He added that from August, additional modern screening equipment would eliminate the need for passengers to remove shoes and belts at security checkpoints.
Despite the changes aimed at easing travel, President Mahama stressed that Ghana would not compromise on national security.
He said Ghana’s approach contrasts with increasing travel restrictions being introduced in some parts of the world, adding that the country remains committed to openness, African unity and innovation-driven governance.
