Eugene Boakye Antwi, former Subin MP and aspirant for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary position, has called on ex-Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to return to Ghana and confront legal scrutiny head-on.
Antwi argues that Ofori-Atta’s prolonged absence is damaging the party’s reputation, fueling perceptions that the NPP harbors criminals.
In an interview on Oyerepa TV with host Parker Wilson monitored by Kumasimail, Antwi emphasized the toll of Ofori-Atta’s stay abroad since the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) named him in a probe last February.
“Have you seen such a thing before? A party that just left office its finance minister absent for one year since Kissi Agyebeng mentioned Ken Ofori-Atta’s name. Do you know the damage it has caused to the party (NPP)?” Antwi asked.
When Wilson probed whether this absence was truly harming the NPP, Antwi replied bluntly: “They’ve placed it in the minds of Ghanaians that we’re thieves.”
Antwi highlighted the broader electoral fallout, noting that non-NPP voters had supported the party in the past.
“Some Ghanaians vote for us who are not NPP members, so if you’re doing things untoward, don’t sit there and say the person criticizing is destroying the party,” he said.
He pointed to high-profile incidents, such as the former Chief Justice’s picket at the Finance Ministry, as factors that contributed to the NPP’s recent election defeat.
Responding to suggestions that he relishes the idea of Ofori-Atta’s potential arrest, Antwi rejected the notion outright.
“How can I be happy about him?” he retorted. Instead, he invoked Ghana’s Constitution, stressing accountability for public funds.
“All the taxes we collect go to the Consolidated Fund we are mere custodians of those taxes. It’s not our money; it’s Ghanaians’ money. So if you hold a position in Ghana, and after your service the government feels you have taken something which doesn’t belong to you, why are you running away? Come and explain yourself.”
