The Ashanti Regional Minister has pledged continued government support for the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), announcing a series of interventions to improve firefighting capabilities and safeguard communities, as the region marked the climax of Fire Awareness Week.
Addressing officers, dignitaries, and members of the public during the ceremony themed “Appreciating our Heroes; Say No to Firefighters Assault and Truck Vandalism,” the Minister emphasized the importance of respecting and empowering firefighters, whom he described as “everyday heroes.”
“Today, we come together not only to raise awareness but to express profound gratitude to the brave men and women of the Ghana National Fire Service who have consistently demonstrated commitment, courage, and sacrifice,” he said.
The Minister recounted the recent Adum fire as a pivotal moment that revealed the logistical and operational challenges facing the service. Since then, he has been receiving weekly updates on fire incidents in the region, which currently average about seven cases per week.
To address the situation, he announced that donations received through AshantiFest have been channeled into repairing key fire engines. Notably, he confirmed that funds have been secured, in collaboration with the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, to repair fire tenders at the Konongo and Kumasi Metro stations.
Looking ahead, the Minister disclosed that discussions are ongoing with the Interior Ministry to procure new fire engines, popularly known as “Fire Thunders.”
“We know that repairs alone will not suffice. The ultimate goal is to equip you with brand-new Fire Tenders,” he said.
The Minister also highlighted efforts to restore fire hydrants across the region, many of which had been obstructed by commercial activities.
He assured the Fire Service of the Regional Coordinating Council’s support in ensuring these hydrants remain accessible and functional. Additionally, plans are underway to drill boreholes in fire-prone areas as a supplementary water source.
A major highlight of the event was the announcement of a nationwide recruitment and training initiative for 5,000 youth as Fire Service Assistants. The initiative, spearheaded by the Interior Ministry, the Ministry for Youth Empowerment, and the Youth Employment Agency, aims to bolster fire safety education and community engagement.
He encouraged the Fire Service to integrate the newly recruited assistants into key outreach programs, and to consider them for future permanent roles.
To further improve fire safety compliance, the Minister proposed the formation of a joint task force comprising the GNFS, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and the Ghana Police Service to enforce building fire certificate renewals.
“As your Regional Minister, I remain committed to walking this journey with you,” he concluded, thanking the service personnel for their unwavering dedication.
The ceremony, which drew stakeholders from across the region, marked the end of a week-long program focused on education, appreciation, and action aimed at reducing fire incidents and protecting firefighting infrastructure.
