The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has deployed a team of technical experts to Nhyinahin to repair a transformer that was damaged by stray military gunfire during a confrontation with civilians.
The incident occurred on Thursday, April 24, 2025, during a funeral procession involving members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). An NDC activist was shot while participating in the procession for a young deceased individual.
The confrontation began when military personnel attempted to forcibly remove a camouflage outfit from one of the mourners, who was reportedly affiliated with the ruling party. The military action angered the youth, leading to a violent exchange in which some protesters threw stones at the soldiers.
In response, the soldiers allegedly opened fire on the group, killing one person instantly and injuring four others.

Stray bullets from the gunfire struck the community’s only electricity transformer, causing it to leak oil dangerously. To prevent a potential disaster, ECG immediately shut down the transformer, plunging the entire community into darkness.
Following the incident, an ECG team visited the area to assess and repair the damage but had to withdraw due to the tense atmosphere.

However, speaking to GHOne News, Benjamin Obeng Asare, Public Relations Officer for ECG in the Ashanti East Region, said efforts are underway to restore power to the community.

“Our team is on the scene trying to restore power to the community. As I speak to you, around 11:30 a.m., the community is still without electricity. But I am confident that power will be restored today,” he assured.
