Five suspects arrested in connection with the violent disturbances that disrupted the New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency executive elections in the Sekyere East Constituency have been remanded into police custody after being re-arraigned before the Mampong District Court.
The accused are expected to appear before the Nsuta Circuit Court on Tuesday, July 15, 2026, for the continuation of proceedings after an earlier sitting at the court was postponed.
Two of the suspects, Kwame Afrifa Mensah and Osman Awuni, are currently receiving treatment at the Mampong Government Hospital under police guard due to injuries they sustained during the incident.
According to medical reports presented to the court, Kwame Afrifa Mensah suffered a deep cut to the middle section of his head, while Osman Awuni is being treated for a swollen injury to his left thigh. Both remain under close medical observation as investigations continue.
The violence is reported to have broken out during the NPP’s constituency executive elections in Sekyere East, where party members had gathered to elect local executives ahead of future political activities.
The disturbances resulted in injuries, disrupted the electoral process, and prompted a swift response from the police, leading to the arrest of several individuals suspected of involvement.
The Ghana Police Service has since intensified investigations into the incident, with authorities indicating that additional arrests could be made if further evidence emerges.
Security agencies have also reiterated their commitment to ensuring that individuals responsible for acts of violence during political activities are brought to justice.
The case has attracted significant public attention, highlighting growing concerns over violence associated with internal political party elections.
Political observers and civil society organizations have consistently called on party leaders and supporters to resolve disputes peacefully and uphold democratic principles during internal electoral processes.
The suspects remain in police custody pending their next court appearance at the Nsuta Circuit Court, where the prosecution is expected to present further evidence as the case proceeds.
