The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Koduah, has expressed deep concern over the rising cases of attacks on journalists recently.
He warned that such incidents pose a serious threat to national security and democracy.
Speaking at the annual Thanksgiving and Get-Together ceremony organized by the Ashanti Regional Chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Justin Koduah commended journalists in the region for their dedication to upholding peace and strengthening Ghana’s democracy through their work.
He acknowledged the resilience of media practitioners in the face of challenges, stating “Despite the threats you have faced in your line of duty, you have remained resolute and impartial in your reportage. Your efforts have greatly contributed to the multi-party democracy we all enjoy, bringing enlightenment to the masses.”
He further noted that while political figures may not always agree with the media’s coverage, journalists have played their role as the fourth estate by holding politicians accountable through fact-checking and balanced reporting.
“We are proud of your work. I encourage you to remain steadfast in your journalistic pursuit, without fear or favor.” Koduah, however, lamented the increasing attacks on journalists, emphasizing the need for urgent intervention.
“The repeated incidents of attacks on journalists threaten our democracy and the unity of our society. The government must take this matter seriously and prosecute all individuals involved in such attacks.”
He added that he had hoped to deliver his remarks in the presence of the Ashanti Regional Minister, stressing that the NDC-led government must urge its supporters to refrain from targeting journalists.
“We recorded several attacks on journalists in this region, particularly during the elections and its aftermath. This is unacceptable. No journalist deserves to be harmed simply for carrying out their lawful duties. The government must act swiftly to protect journalists and ensure that offenders face the full force of the law.”
The GJA’s second annual Thanksgiving and Get-Together was held at the Royal Longford Event Centre in Kumasi.
The gathering was attended by several dignitaries, including the Ashanti regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, NPP Ashanti regional Chairman hopeful Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, Traditional leaders .
Also present was the Ashanti Regional Commander of the Ghana Prisons Service, Deputy Director of Prisons (DPP) James Mwinyelle Ing.
The event provided a platform for discussions on media freedom, safety, and the role of journalists in promoting democratic governance.
