The Tamale Metropolitan Assembly has intensified investments in basic education and primary healthcare, rolling out new classroom infrastructure, furniture, and health facilities aimed at improving access and learning outcomes across the metropolis.
The interventions were disclosed by Mayor of Tamale, Hon. Alhaji Adam Abubakari Takoro, during the Assembly’s maiden stakeholder engagement and Town Hall Meeting held on 7 May 2026 under the Government’s “Accounting to the People” initiative.
The engagement, part of President John Dramani Mahama’s Resetting Agenda, brought together traditional leaders, civil society organisations, religious bodies and residents to review ongoing development projects within the metropolis.
According to the Mayor, several classroom blocks and kindergarten facilities have been constructed and furnished at Dalogyili, Gumbihini and Lamashigu using District Assemblies Common Fund resources.
He further revealed that the Assembly has distributed more than 2,600 pieces of school furniture, including 1,170 dual desks and 1,450 mono desks, to support basic schools struggling with inadequate seating arrangements.
On health infrastructure, Hon. Takoro announced the completion of Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds at Kudula and Dohinayili to expand access to primary healthcare in underserved communities.
He also noted that government had initiated reforms at the Tamale Teaching Hospital following a ministerial engagement, aimed at improving efficiency and service delivery at the region’s major referral facility.
Beyond infrastructure, the Assembly has also strengthened social protection for vulnerable groups. According to the Mayor, over GH¢231,800 was disbursed in 2025 to support Persons Living With Disabilities (PWDs) in education, healthcare, petty trading and vocational training.
In the education sector, Hon. Takoro commended Members of Parliament within the metropolis for supporting BECE candidates through extra classes, provision of mathematical sets and transport assistance during examinations.
Speaking at the event on behalf of the Northern Regional Minister, Acting Chief Director of the Northern Regional Coordinating Council (NRCC), Mr. Sumaila Ewuntomah Abudu, described the engagement as key to improving accountability in governance.
“The essence of this engagement is to strengthen the relationship between government and citizens through openness, accountability, and inclusive governance. Development can only be meaningful when the people are actively involved in the process,” he stated.
He added that the Resetting Agenda stakeholder engagements are designed to ensure that MMDAs account directly to citizens on projects and programmes being implemented in their jurisdictions.
The session ended with an interactive forum where residents raised concerns and made suggestions on education, health and local service delivery.
