Several passengers sustained injuries following an armed attack on a bus traveling along the Bolgatanga-Walewale highway on the night of January 11, 2025.
The incident occurred near Pusu-Namong, a suburb of the Bolgatanga municipality in Ghana’s Upper East Region. The targeted bus, a Garu-Kumasi vehicle with registration number AS 9392-21, was ambushed by armed assailants believed to be of Mamprusi origin.
Victims receiving treatment at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital recounted their ordeal to Smart Media Upper East on January 12, 2025. According to Ibrahim, one of the injured passengers, four gunmen dressed in military-style camouflage and wearing masks launched the attack.
“They used a bulldozer to block the highway, preventing the driver from escaping to a safe place. Three of them opened fire on the passengers, while one focused on targeting the driver, shooting repeatedly,” Ibrahim explained.
The Bolgatanga-Walewale highway, along with the Bolgatanga-Bawku-Pulmakuom route, has become increasingly perilous for travelers due to ongoing tensions stemming from the Bawku conflict. The unrest was sparked in November 2021 following the disputed enskinment of Seidu Abagre, who rivaled the authority of the legitimate Bawku Naba, Asigiri Abugrago Azoka II.
Regional police have launched an investigation into the attack. Authorities are urging travelers to exercise caution as security measures are being reinforced to prevent further incidents.
