Former President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his dedication to removing trade barriers that hinder the smooth transportation of goods between Ghana and Mali.
His pledge comes amid ongoing efforts to strengthen economic ties between the two nations despite Mali’s departure from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Speaking after a closed-door meeting with Mali’s Transitional President, Assimi Goita, in Bamako as part of his Good Neighborliness tour, Mahama emphasized the importance of fostering efficient cross-border trade.
He acknowledged the long-standing trade relations between Ghana and Mali and highlighted the need to eliminate challenges faced by transporters along the transit corridor.
“For a very long time, our countries have traded with each other, and our people have moved freely across borders,” Mahama stated.
“We also have a crucial transit corridor where Malian and Ghanaian long-distance drivers transport goods from our ports to Mali and vice versa. We discussed how to remove obstacles so these drivers can carry out their work without difficulties,” he added.

Mahama commenced his Good Neighborliness tour on March 8, 2025, and was welcomed at Modibo Keita Airport in Bamako by General Assimi Goita.
Following their meeting at the Presidential Palace, the two leaders also explored avenues for enhanced defense cooperation, particularly in counterterrorism efforts. Additionally, they discussed reviving the Permanent Joint Commission of Cooperation (PJCC) to bolster bilateral relations for mutual benefit.
