The Ministry of the Interior has announced a major initiative aimed at addressing youth unemployment while strengthening the country’s security sector.
The Minister for the Interior Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak supervised the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ghana Prisons Service and the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) to officially launch the Youth in Prisons Service Assistance programme.
Under the agreement, 5,000 young Ghanaians will be recruited as Prisons Assistants and deployed nationwide to support the operational capacity of the Ghana Prisons Service.
The YEA will fully fund the initiative, covering training costs and providing monthly stipends to all beneficiaries.
In turn, the Ghana Prisons Service will design and implement the training curriculum as well as oversee the deployment of the recruits.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Interior Minister expressed gratitude to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for what he described as “a bold policy intervention” to tackle unemployment.
“The government remains committed to walking the talk by providing practical, results-driven solutions to the unemployment challenge,” he said.
The new initiative is part of a broader collaboration between the YEA and various security agencies, including the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service.
Authorities say the programme is expected to create sustainable jobs for young people while contributing to national peace and security.
“This is another step towards building a safer and more prosperous Ghana,” the Minister noted.
Recruitment and training under the Youth in Prisons Service Assistance programme are expected to commence in the coming months.
