Voters in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region go to the polls today, Tuesday, September 2, 2025, to choose a new Member of Parliament following the death of the incumbent, Ernest Kumi.
More than 50,000 registered voters are expected to take part in the by-election, which has become a key political contest between the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The NPP has put forward Solomon Kwame Asumadu, while the NDC is represented by Bernard Bediako Baidoo. Both candidates have mounted intense campaigns, supported by visits from party leaders and national executives in the weeks leading up to the vote.
To ensure a peaceful process, the Ghana Police Service has deployed over 5,500 personnel across the constituency. Officers have been tasked with maintaining order before, during, and after the polls.
Police have also cautioned against violence, voter intimidation, and electoral malpractice, warning that offenders will face swift action.
The Electoral Commission has pledged a transparent and credible exercise, with measures in place for timely delivery of materials, effective monitoring, and rapid collation of results.
Today’s by-election is being closely watched nationwide, with analysts describing it as an important barometer of political sentiment ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The outcome, they say, could signal which of the two main parties is gaining momentum as the country edges toward its next major political showdown.
