Former President John Mahama has revealed that the predecessors of President Akufo-Addo, including the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), sent a delegation to England to petition against Ghana’s independence in 1957.
According to Mahama, this move was a clear indication that the UGCC, which the current administration is trying to recognize as founders of Ghana, did not support the country’s fight for independence.
“…For those of you who don’t know, when the Queen finally agreed to give Ghana independence, the UGCC, which Nana Akufo-Addo is fighting to be recognized as founders of Ghana, wrote a petition. They sent people to England to tell the Queen not to grant independence because we were not ready yet,” he stated.
The NDC flagbearer, speaking in the Upper East Region, criticized President Akufo-Addo’s decision to change the holiday from July 1 to August 4.
“Nobody can come and rewrite our history!” he exclaimed.
Mahama promised to restore July 1 as Founders’ Day if elected into power.
“Apart from destroying the economy, one of the things this government wants to do is to rewrite our history, and we shall not allow them to rewrite our history because the President said he does not accept that one person can be the founder of our nation.”
