The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has expressed deep sorrow following a devastating fire outbreak at the Anwona Market, also known as Anwona Dwom, which occurred on Monday, January 26, 2026 night.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Assembly said the fire caused significant losses to traders, destroying goods, livelihoods, and years of hard work. Although no casualties were reported, the incident has dealt a major blow to the many traders who depend on the market for their daily survival.
On behalf of the Metropolitan Chief Executive and the entire Assembly, the KMA extended its heartfelt sympathies to the affected traders and their families, describing the incident as not only a loss of property but a painful setback to hardworking men and women who contribute to Kumasi’s local economy.
The Assembly commended the Ghana National Fire Service for its swift response and professionalism in bringing the fire under control. It also acknowledged the efforts of individuals and institutions that supported the emergency response, noting that their dedication helped prevent further damage.
According to the statement, the KMA is working closely with relevant agencies to assess the extent of the damage and explore appropriate interventions to support affected traders. The Assembly assured the public that further updates would be communicated as engagements progress.
The KMA also urged affected traders to remain calm, united, and cooperative as authorities work toward identifying sustainable solutions. It reiterated its commitment to strengthening safety measures in markets across the metropolis to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
“In this difficult moment, we encourage all affected persons to take strength from our collective solidarity,” the statement said, adding that the Assembly stands with the traders as they work toward recovery, resilience, and hope.
The statement was signed by Henrietta A.K. Aboagye, Public Relations Officer of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly.
