Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has said he endured insults and false accusations from members of his own party during the campaign to become its flagbearer, urging supporters to embrace patience and unity following the contest.
Speaking at an Islamic thanksgiving service in Accra on Friday after his election as the party’s presidential candidate for election 2028, Dr Bawumia said the internal race had been marked by what he described as “a storm of lies and vilification”.
“I have listened to my own party members insult me,” he told the congregation. “I have listened to them tell lies about me and my family. I have listened to them say hurtful and untrue things about me, all in their quest to bring me down and achieve their ambitions.”
Despite the attacks, he said he chose not to retaliate.
“But I smiled through the storm because I knew Allah knows the truth and will not forsake me,” he said.
Dr Bawumia cited Islamic teachings to explain his response, referring to a hadith in which the Prophet Muhammad advises believers to respond to false accusations with patience, good character and trust in God rather than retaliation.
He acknowledged that internal elections could leave lasting divisions.
“Elections can leave scars that may not show on the surface, but sometimes cut deeply,” he said, adding that he had experienced this throughout the campaign.
The vice-president was recently elected as the party’s flagbearer ahead of the next general election. His remarks are seen as an appeal for reconciliation within the party as it prepares for the national vote.
