Two Ghanaian soldiers have been critically injured after a missile attack struck a Ghana Armed Forces position in Southern Lebanon on Thursday evening.
According to a press release issued by the Ghana Armed Forces, the incident occurred at the Ghanaian Battalion Headquarters serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) amid ongoing exchanges of fire between the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.
The military said the position came under two missile attacks between 5:45 p.m. and 5:52 p.m. local time.
In a statement released by the Department of Public Relations at the General Headquarters in Burma Camp, Accra, the Ghana Armed Forces said two soldiers were critically injured, while another soldier suffered trauma as a result of the attack.
The missile strike also hit the Officers’ Mess facility, which was completely destroyed by fire.
The injured personnel are currently receiving treatment at a Level One Medical Bunker and are reported to be in stable condition, according to the statement.
Arrangements are underway for their evacuation to the UNIFIL Headquarters Referral Hospital for further medical care.
The Ghana Armed Forces assured the public that other troops in the area remain safe and are currently sheltering in underground bunkers due to the fragile security situation.
Meanwhile, the Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration (Ghana), has formally protested the attack at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The government has also urged all parties involved in the conflict in Southern Lebanon to respect their obligations to ensure the safety of UN peacekeepers operating in the area.
The statement was signed by Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin of the Ghana Navy, who is the Acting Director General of Public Relations for the Ghana Armed Forces.
