The National Labour Commission (NLC) has declared the planned nationwide strike by the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG) illegal and directed the association to immediately rescind its decision.
In a press release issued on March 5, 2026, the Commission said it had taken note of media reports announcing that CLOGSAG intended to begin a nationwide strike on Monday, March 9, 2026.
According to the NLC, the declaration of the strike contravenes provisions of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651) governing industrial actions in Ghana.
The Commission explained that under Sections 159 and 160 of the Act, any party intending to embark on a strike must notify the other party involved in the dispute and the Commission by serving a seven-day notice before the action can be taken.
The NLC noted that strike action can only proceed after the expiration of the seven-day notice period and where there has been no intervention by the Commission under Section 161 of the Act.
However, the Commission said CLOGSAG failed to comply with these legal requirements.
“Consequently, the declaration of strike by CLOGSAG constitutes an illegality under the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651),” the statement said.
The Commission has therefore summoned the disputing parties to appear before it on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at 2 p.m. to address the matter.
The NLC also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peaceful and harmonious labour relations in the country in accordance with the law.
The statement was signed by Larry-George Botchway, Head of Public Affairs at the National Labour Commission, on behalf of the Executive Secretary.
