The High Court in Accra has scheduled Monday, March 16, 2026, to determine whether the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako—popularly known as Chairman Wontumi—and two others should open their defence in an ongoing criminal case.
The court, presided over by Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay, will rule on whether the prosecution has established a prima facie case against the accused persons after closing its case.
The prosecution concluded its presentation after calling four witnesses, and under the law, the court must now determine whether the evidence presented is sufficient to require the accused persons to respond to the charges.
If the court finds that the prosecution has met the legal threshold, the accused will be directed to open their defence. However, if the court rules that no case has been established, the accused persons will be acquitted and discharged.
Status hearing
During a status hearing on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, the Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, told the court that the prosecution had filed its response to a submission of no case filed by the defence.
He urged the court to dismiss the application and direct the accused persons to present their defence.
Counsel for the accused, Andy Appiah-Kubi, requested additional time to file a response to the Attorney General’s reply.
The court subsequently directed the defence to submit its response by Thursday, March 13, ahead of the ruling scheduled for March 16.
