The Confucius Institute at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi (KNUST) has marked International Chinese Language Day with an event aimed at promoting understanding of Chinese writing, culture and everyday communication.
The programme brought together students and participants for demonstrations and hands-on sessions that explored the origins, structure and evolution of Chinese characters. Learners were guided through how symbols combine to form meaning, offering insight into the logic of the language.

Professor Ke Ningli, Director of the Confucius Institute at KNUST, said the initiative is designed to build sustained interest in Chinese language learning among Ghanaians.
“We want more people to appreciate how accessible and beautiful the Chinese language can be when taught in a friendly environment,” he said.
He added that the celebration also seeks to boost enrolment in the Institute’s language programmes while strengthening cultural ties between Ghana and China.
“Strengthening cross-cultural communication begins with opportunities like this. When Ghanaians interact with these traditions, understanding grows naturally,” he said.
Participants took part in activities including writing their names in Chinese, practising calligraphy with ink brushes, creating paper art and performing popular Chinese songs.
