The Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana has strongly criticized the decision by the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) to ban the use of the Toyota Voxy for commercial transport.
In a press release issued on April 8, the group described the directive as “lazy and ill-conceived,” arguing that it fails to address the root causes of road safety challenges in the country.
The operators said the Toyota Voxy is a widely used and reliable vehicle within the commercial transport sector, warning that the ban could negatively impact the livelihoods of many drivers and their families.
Instead of imposing a blanket ban, the group urged the NRSA to adopt alternative measures, including intensified driver education, safety training, and stakeholder engagement.
“We strongly condemn this move and urge the NRSA to reconsider,” the statement said.
The association further called on the authority to implement targeted safety interventions in high-risk areas and address broader issues such as poor road infrastructure, which it believes significantly contribute to road accidents.
The group also indicated that it would resist the decision and take necessary steps to protect the interests of its members.
The statement was jointly signed by the National Chairman of the association, Asonaba Nana Wiredu, along with Public Relations Officer David Agboado and Yaw Barimah.
