Ghana has received commendation from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees for its continued commitment to international refugee protection standards.
This follows a courtesy call on the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, by the Deputy Director for West and Central Africa at UNHCR, Andrew Wyllie, at his office in Accra.
According to the minister, who shared details of the meeting on social media, Mr. Wyllie praised Ghana’s consistent record in receiving and managing refugees, particularly during periods of crisis. He noted that the country’s asylum system is well aligned with UNHCR policies and standards.
Mr. Wyllie reaffirmed the UN agency’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with Ghana, including efforts to enhance the asylum system and mobilize resources for refugee-related programmes.
He also called for increased integration of refugees into national systems, including access to education, employment, skills development and income-generating opportunities.
Particular commendation was given to the Ghana Refugee Agribusiness Sustainable Programme, which he described as a practical initiative that promotes self-reliance, resilience and dignified livelihoods for both refugees and host communities.
In response, the Interior Minister reaffirmed Ghana’s Pan-Africanist values, emphasizing that the country’s approach to refugee protection is rooted in solidarity and shared humanity.
“Crisis can befall anyone. While our resources may be limited, Ghana remains committed to doing its best and extending the necessary courtesies to asylum seekers,” he stated.
Mr. Mohammed-Mubarak also acknowledged that Ghana is currently managing a significant number of migrants and is exploring sustainable solutions, including the registration of eligible individuals as refugees and facilitating voluntary repatriation where necessary.
He expressed appreciation for the UNHCR delegation’s visit and commended the Ghana Refugee Board for its continued dedication and service in managing refugee affairs in the country.
