The University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS) has secured approval from the General Legal Council to run the newly introduced one-year Pre-Bar Programme, marking a significant milestone in legal education in Northern Ghana.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Emmanuel Kanchebe Derbile, announced the development during the University’s Second Congregation of the School of Law and Special Graduation Ceremony of the School of Graduate Studies held on Saturday, July 4, 2026.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, UBIDS is among only 19 institutions across the country authorised to offer the programme under the Legal Education Act, 2026 (Act 1170).
He described the approval as a landmark achievement that will expand access to professional legal education, particularly for aspiring lawyers in Northern Ghana who have traditionally faced geographical and logistical barriers in pursuing legal training.
Professor Derbile also celebrated the performance of the University’s pioneer law graduates, revealing that 28 out of the 42 graduates—representing nearly 70 percent—have secured admission to the Ghana School of Law.
He said the success of the inaugural graduating class reflects the quality of legal education being offered at the University’s School of Law and validates the institution’s investment in producing competent legal professionals.
The announcement comes as Ghana implements reforms to legal education through the Legal Education Act, 2026 (Act 1170), which introduced the one-year Pre-Bar Programme as part of efforts to broaden access to professional legal training while maintaining academic standards.
The Second Congregation of the School of Law and the Special Graduation of the School of Graduate Studies brought together graduating students, university officials, faculty members, families and invited guests to celebrate the academic achievements of the graduates.
The latest developments are expected to strengthen UBIDS’ position as an emerging centre for legal education and professional training in northern Ghana.
