At least 13 people have been confirmed dead following a devastating three-vehicle collision at Odumase, near Konongo, on the Kumasi–Accra Highway in the Ashanti Region, with authorities warning that the death toll could rise.
The fatal crash involved a cargo truck loaded with tomatoes, a passenger bus and a fuel tanker, which officials said was not transporting fuel at the time of the accident.

Although the exact cause of the collision is yet to be established, eyewitnesses told JoyNews that the crash occurred after an alleged wrongful overtaking attempt, resulting in a head-on collision involving the vehicles.
Emergency responders, including personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service, the National Ambulance Service and the Ghana Police Service, rushed to the scene to rescue trapped occupants and transport the injured to nearby health facilities for treatment.

The accident caused significant traffic congestion along the busy Kumasi–Accra Highway as rescue teams and security personnel worked to clear the wreckage and recover victims.
The tragedy was compounded by reports of a second road crash at Dadieso, also near Konongo, shortly after the Odumase collision. While details of the second incident remain limited, its occurrence on the same stretch of road has renewed concerns about safety on one of the country’s busiest transport corridors.
Authorities have confirmed 13 fatalities so far but say the number could increase as rescue and recovery operations continue and critically injured victims remain under medical care.
The latest incidents add to growing concerns over the persistent loss of lives on Ghana’s major highways, with road safety advocates continuing to call for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and greater caution by motorists.
