Members of Parliament from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Northern Caucus have donated food items, a bull and GH¢20,000 to support the ongoing funeral rites of the late Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa-Naa Abubakari Mahama II, at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi.
The donation was presented on Thursday during the third-day Adua (Islamic prayers for the dead) in honour of the late monarch, as thousands of mourners gathered at the Gbewaa Palace to pray for his peaceful repose.
The parliamentary delegation, acting on behalf of the Northern Caucus of the NDC Majority in Parliament, was led by the Caucus Chairman and Member of Parliament for Zabzugu, Hon. Umar Alhassan.
Other members of the delegation included the Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, Prof. Hamza Adam; the Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Prof. Alidu Seidu; the Member of Parliament for Mion, Hon. Mohammed Abdul-Aziz Misbawu; the Member of Parliament for Nanton, Dr. Sheriff Abdul-Khaliq; and the Member of Parliament for Yendi, Lawyer Osman Abdulai Jofa.

As part of the donation, the MPs presented 10 bags of maize, 10 bags of rice, five gallons of cooking oil, one bull and a cash amount of GH¢20,000 to assist the Gbewaa Palace with the organisation of the funeral rites.

The gesture, according to the delegation, was intended to express the caucus’ solidarity with the Royal Family, the chiefs and people of Dagbon during one of the most solemn periods in the kingdom’s history.

The donation comes as Dagbon continues to observe the funeral rites of Yaa-Naa Abubakari Mahama II, whose passing has drawn tributes and support from traditional authorities, political leaders, diplomatic missions, religious bodies, corporate organisations and citizens from across Ghana.

Thursday’s third-day Adua attracted thousands of mourners to the Gbewaa Palace, where special prayers were offered for the late King’s soul and for continued peace and unity within the Dagbon Kingdom.
Yaa-Naa Abubakari Mahama II, who ascended the Skin of Dagbon in January 2019, is widely remembered for his efforts to strengthen reconciliation, foster peaceful coexistence and preserve the customs and traditions of one of Ghana’s oldest traditional kingdoms.
