A formal complaint has been lodged with Ghana’s General Legal Council (GLC) by Daniel Kwame Ofosu-Appiah, a private citizen, accusing former Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, of serious professional misconduct during the ongoing criminal trial of Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and others.
The petition, filed under Section 18 of the Legal Profession Act, 1960 (Act 32), centers on an audio recording and WhatsApp messages admitted as evidence in court.
These materials purportedly show Dame attempting to influence the testimony of Richard Jakpa, the third accused in the high-profile case.
According to the complaint, the interactions occurred while the trial was in progress and without the knowledge of Jakpa’s legal counsel, raising grave ethical concerns.
Ofosu-Appiah alleges that Dame’s actions constitute multiple breaches of the Legal Profession (Professional Conduct and Etiquette) Rules, 2020.
Specifically, he cites violations related to honesty, witness tampering, and undermining the administration of justice.
The complainant argues that such conduct not only compromises the integrity of the judicial process but also erodes public confidence in Ghana’s legal system.
The petition urges the GLC’s Disciplinary Committee to launch a thorough investigation and consider imposing severe sanctions, including possible suspension or removal from the roll of lawyers.
Ofosu-Appiah emphasizes the urgent public interest in the matter, stating that swift and decisive action is necessary to preserve trust in the justice system.
The complaint has also been copied to the Acting Chief Justice, His Lordship Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, highlighting the gravity of the allegations and the need for accountability among high-ranking legal officials.
