Ghana’s mining magnate and Chief Executive Officer of Engineers & Planners, Ibrahim Mahama, has pledged to fully cover the medical expenses of Abdul-Samed Sulemana, popularly known as “Awuche”, the 33-year-old believed to be Ghana’s tallest man, whose left leg is scheduled to be amputated following a severe infection.
The intervention comes days after Kumasimail reported that Awuche had appealed to the public for financial support to undergo the life-saving surgery after doctors recommended the amputation to prevent the infection from spreading to the rest of his body.

Confirming the development to Kumasimail, Rafik Mahama, Special Aide to Ibrahim Mahama, said the businessman had decided to shoulder the full cost of Awuche’s treatment.
According to Rafik, all individuals, groups and organisations that had intended to contribute towards Awuche’s medical care should kindly hold off, as Ibrahim Mahama has committed to providing everything required for him to regain his health.
He said Ibrahim Mahama would take care of all hospital bills associated with Awuche’s treatment, assuring that the financial burden on the young man and his family had been lifted.
Before speaking with Rafik, Awuche had also confirmed to Kumasimail that he had been informed of Ibrahim Mahama’s decision to support him.
Although doctors are yet to determine the total cost of the surgery and subsequent treatment, Ibrahim Mahama has assured that every medical expense required for the procedure and Awuche’s recovery will be fully covered.

Awuche, a native of Gambaga in the North East Region, has been battling gigantism for several years. He was referred from the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu to the Tamale Teaching Hospital after doctors diagnosed a severe infection in his left leg, which had caused part of the limb to rot and recommended amputation as the only viable option.
In Kumasimail’s earlier report, Awuche disclosed that financial constraints had forced him to return home to Gambaga instead of remaining at the referral hospital for the surgery. He appealed to the general public for financial assistance, saying he needed urgent support to undergo the amputation and save his life.
Ibrahim Mahama’s intervention is expected to remove the financial obstacle that delayed the surgery and pave the way for Awuche to receive the urgent medical treatment he requires.
The announcement has been warmly received by many Ghanaians, with appreciation also extended to Ibrahim Mahama’s Special Aide, Mahama Rafik, for communicating the intervention and facilitating the support that is expected to give Awuche a renewed chance at recovery.
