A new legal front has opened in the unfolding controversy surrounding Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, following confirmation that a writ of summons from Exim Bank was served on him earlier Tuesday.
The development adds a civil legal dimension to an already politically charged case against the outspoken politicain.
Speaking to reporters, former member of parliament for Asante-Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed the receipt of the writ.
“We have also received this afternoon a writ of summons from Exim Bank, and we are going to respond to the pleadings tomorrow,” Appiah-Kubi said. “We are very hopeful that we’ll be able to mount a defence.”
He emphasized the distinction between the civil and criminal aspects of the case, stating, “This is one of a supposed criminal investigation, but I am confident that we will be able to put up a defence. We consider the Exim Bank issue a civil matter, and that’s how we will respond to it in court.”
The case took a dramatic turn earlier this week with the hospitalisation of Chairman Wontumi under undisclosed circumstances.
The incident has intensified political tensions, with several New Patriotic Party (NPP) leaders condemning the arrest and related events as politically motivated.
National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye described the situation as reminiscent of the “dark days” of political intimidation, while other party officials have called for due process to be followed without bias.
Despite the rising tensions, Appiah-Kubi affirmed the party’s commitment to legal and constitutional processes. “We’re cooperating. We believe in the rule of law,” he said.
The NPP has pledged to keep the public informed as Wontumi’s legal and medical situations develop.
