Yaw Isham Bonsu, the Ashanti Regional Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has emerged as a prominent contender for the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairmanship, following his official declaration to contest.
With a political career spanning over 30 years, Bonsu is widely regarded within party circles as a seasoned grassroots organizer whose rise through the ranks reflects long-standing commitment and internal party loyalty.
He began his journey in 1994 as Nkramom Branch Organizer, a role that marked his entry into active politics at the local level. By 1995, he had advanced to become Old Suame Ward Organizer after winning a competitive internal contest.
Bonsu’s influence expanded in 2002 when he was elected Tafo Suame Constituency Youth Organizer. That same year, he was appointed Acting Constituency Organizer, signaling growing trust in his leadership capabilities.
From 2004 to 2014, he served as Suame Constituency Organizer, a decade-long tenure during which he worked to strengthen party structures in a constituency often considered challenging terrain for the NDC.
His consistent performance at the constituency level earned him elevation to the regional front, where he served as Deputy Ashanti Regional Organizer from 2014 to 2018. In 2018, he secured election as Ashanti Regional Organizer, a position he continues to hold.
Colleagues describe Bonsu as a disciplined and resilient political operative with a deep understanding of party organization, particularly within the Ashanti Region—an area critical to the NDC’s electoral ambitions.
His bid for the regional chairmanship is seen as a natural progression in his political trajectory, and it is expected to influence the dynamics of the party’s upcoming internal elections in the region.
Although he has not yet publicly detailed his policy agenda, Bonsu is anticipated to campaign on themes of party unity, grassroots empowerment, and improved electoral performance.
As the NDC prepares for its regional elections, Bonsu’s experience and long service position him as a key figure to watch in the contest for leadership in the Ashanti Region.
