Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has openly questioned the loyalty of some Asante paramount chiefs (Amanhene), accusing them of failing to defend the authority and integrity of Asanteman amid reported chieftaincy violations in parts of the Bono Region.
Addressing the Asanteman Council on April 20, 2026, the Asantehene expressed strong dissatisfaction with what he described as a passive and self-serving posture by the chiefs, suggesting their silence undermines the unity and strength of the kingdom.
“Why are our men sitting aloof for two people in Bono to misbehave? You are all waiting for Otumfuo to act. We are all silent. You want to protect your names,” he said.
Otumfuo indicated that the inaction of the Amanhene raises concerns about their commitment to the Asante Kingdom, especially at a time when traditional authority is being challenged within its jurisdictions.
He contrasted the current situation with the sacrifices of past Asante heroes such as Tweneboa Kodua, who offered himself for execution to save the kingdom, and Yaa Asantewaa, who led the historic War of the Golden Stool.
“Now we have all turned into women,” Otumfuo said, in a remark aimed at challenging the chiefs to demonstrate courage and loyalty in defending Asanteman.
The Asantehene further warned against any attempts to prevent traditional leaders from Bono and Bono East from visiting Manhyia to pay homage, stressing that those areas remain an integral part of Asanteman.
He reaffirmed that allegiance to the Golden Stool is non-negotiable and called on the Amanhene to take a more active and loyal stance in safeguarding the kingdom’s authority and heritage.
