The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has begun installing two high-capacity power transformers at the Ridge Bulk Supply Point in Kumasi, in a move aimed at improving power quality and stabilizing electricity supply in parts of the metropoli
The project involves replacing two existing 20/26MVA transformers with upgraded 30/39MVA units, a transition expected to significantly enhance capacity and reduce strain on the distribution network.
ECG says the upgrade is specifically designed to address recent intermittent outages and voltage fluctuations experienced in some areas of Kumasi, largely attributed to increasing electricity demand rather than generation constraints.
The Acting Managing Director of ECG, Kwame Kpekpena, underscored the strategic importance of the project, noting that Kumasi’s rapid expansion requires corresponding investment in energy infrastructure.
“Kumasi is expanding, and electricity demand is rising with it. This upgrade ensures our infrastructure keeps pace so customers can enjoy more stable and reliable power,” he said.
On-site, the Manager for Substation and Switchgear Maintenance in Ashanti Sub-Transmission described the installation as both urgent and technically demanding.
“The existing transformers are under pressure. These new units give the system breathing room and improve overall stability,” he explained.
Technical teams from ECG’s Accra and Ashanti Sub-Transmission divisions are jointly executing the installation, which is scheduled over two days. Transformer 2 will be replaced and energized on May 6, followed by Transformer 1 on May 7.
To facilitate the works, ECG has announced planned outages on both days from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., involving temporary shutdowns on sections of the 33kV network and controlled load management on 11kV feeders.
The company has assured customers that the interruptions will be carefully managed and limited in duration.
“We understand the inconvenience, but these are necessary steps to deliver a more reliable system,” said Collins Manu, Communications Officer for Ashanti Sub-Transmission.
