The Controller and Accountant-General has transferred a total of GHS 6.1 million to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as “Mahama Cares,” following salary deductions and directives issued by President John Dramani Mahama, Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu has announced.
At the launch of the Fund last year, President Mahama pledged to donate six months of his salary to support its operations. He later encouraged all government appointees to contribute one month of their salaries to the initiative.
According to Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President also directed that appointees who failed to meet the deadline for asset declaration should forfeit three months of their salaries, with the funds redirected to the programme.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu stated that the Controller and Accountant-General has formally notified government of the deductions and confirmed the transfer of the initial GHS 6.1 million to the Fund.
He added that arrangements are currently underway to transfer the final tranche, which will include deductions from appointees who defaulted on the asset declaration requirement.
The initiative forms part of efforts to finance the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, commonly referred to as “Mahama Cares,” aimed at supporting healthcare delivery and related interventions in the country.
