The 2028 presidential flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mahamudu Bawumia, has ruled out any form of victimisation within the party, declaring that no Member of Parliament should be targeted for failing to support his presidential bid during the party’s primaries.
“I’ll never push for the removal of an MP because he didn’t support me and nobody should do that in my name,” Dr. Bawumia stated while addressing the NPP parliamentary caucus.
According to him, the party must move beyond internal divisions following the presidential primaries and unite ahead of future political contests.
“We have finished the presidential primaries and thus I don’t see any faction in the NPP,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia urged members of the Minority caucus to project themselves as a government-in-waiting and adopt a more strategic approach in opposing the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“We must always project the posture that we’re a party waiting to govern,” he stressed.
He further charged the caucus to focus on holding the government accountable for its promises and public claims.
“We must hold the government to account for its promises and claims,” he noted.
The former Vice President criticised what he described as overreliance on slogans in governance, insisting that government policies must produce measurable improvements in the lives of ordinary Ghanaians.
“We’re not interested in statistical stability in itself unless it is translated into improvement in the lives of the people,” he stated.
He also called on the Minority to demand implementation details of the government’s proposed 1-3-3 formula under the 24-hour economy policy.
“When government makes a claim, ask for the numbers. The people are not interested in slogans anymore,” he added.
Dr. Bawumia advised the caucus against opposing every government policy indiscriminately, warning that such an approach could weaken the effectiveness of the opposition.
“An opposition that opposes everything is heard by nobody,” he remarked.
He further urged MPs to reserve parliamentary walkouts and boycotts for only the most serious national issues.
“Let’s reserve walkouts and boycotts to the gravest of things. Let’s be strategic in choosing our battles,” he said.
The NPP flagbearer also assured members that the party under his leadership would become more responsive to the concerns of Ghanaians.
“The new NPP under my leadership will be more responsive,” he stated.
Dr. Bawumia additionally accused the NDC of attempting to appropriate the achievements of the previous administration.
“The NDC will try to steal even our records,” he claimed.
Reaffirming his commitment to democratic principles, he declared that “Ghana’s democracy was not built on fear.”
