The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) on Tuesday destroyed a large consignment of seized drugs and illegal tobacco products in Wa after intercepting them in separate anti-smuggling operations at Ghana’s borders, in a move aimed at preventing the contraband from reaching the local market.
The destruction exercise, which began at 9:00 a.m. at the Busa Road dump site, was conducted in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), with officials from the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) overseeing the process to ensure compliance with regulatory and environmental standards.

Items destroyed included two sacks of Business Royal and Oris cigarettes seized on April 14, 2025; a package containing 69 packets of 500ml Multi-Chris; 50 packets of 50mg/ml Ketamine Hydrochloride, a controlled substance; and 20 boxes of Golden Seal and Bon International cigarettes, intercepted during separate border enforcement operations.
According to Customs records, the Multi-Chris and Ketamine Hydrochloride were seized on July 20, 2025, while the Golden Seal and Bon International cigarettes were confiscated on April 24, 2026.
Customs said the consignments were intercepted before they could enter the Ghanaian market as part of intensified efforts to combat smuggling, drug trafficking and the illegal trade in regulated products.
The destruction was carried out under the supervision of the EPA, while the FDA and NACOC verified the disposal of the regulated substances.
The exercise forms part of ongoing efforts by Ghana’s border security and regulatory agencies to strengthen enforcement against illicit trade and protect public health.
