More than 38,000 people have been displaced following heavy rainfall that caused widespread flooding across several communities in Accra, the Interior Minister, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, has announced.
According to the Minister, the city recorded 169mm of rainfall during the downpour, the highest level experienced in Accra since 1992, resulting in severe flooding and significant damage in several parts of the capital.
Addressing the impact of the disaster, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak said 25 communities have been affected, with more than 7,700 households displaced by the floods.
He disclosed that at least 12 people have been confirmed dead, seven others remain missing, while emergency response teams continue search and rescue operations in affected areas.
The Minister noted that the Ledzokuku area recorded about 1,200 displaced persons, with one confirmed death reported.
In Weija-Gbawe, about 2,500 people have been displaced, affecting approximately 500 households, while Korle Klottey recorded the highest impact, with about 6,000 people displaced and 1,300 households affected.
Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak also revealed that more than 1,200 residents in Samreboi have been displaced as a result of the flooding.
He assured residents that government agencies, including the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other emergency response bodies, are working to provide support to affected communities and assess the extent of the damage.
The Interior Minister urged residents in flood-prone areas to remain cautious and follow safety directives as authorities continue efforts to respond to the situation.
