One person has sustained a gunshot wound to the leg during a confrontation between a joint Military and Police team believed to be attached to the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) and a group of suspected illegal miners at Kyebi in the Abuakwa South Municipality of the Eastern Region.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear.
However, information gathered by Kumasi Mail, indicates that the confrontation occurred after a group of youth engaged in mining activities allegedly blocked an access road leading to the mining site to prevent the security personnel from entering.
The youth reportedly accused the security team of selectively enforcing the anti-illegal mining campaign, alleging that officers bypassed other mining sites operating in the area before attempting to clamp down on theirs.
According to sources, the miners claimed that other individuals engaged in similar illegal mining activities had not been targeted, prompting accusations of bias and favouritism against the security personnel.
The confrontation reportedly escalated, resulting in one person being shot in the leg. The victim was rushed to the Kibi Government Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.
Meanwhile, tension remains high in parts of Kyebi, particularly within the Zongo community, where some youth have reportedly gathered to demand justice over the incident.
The Military, the Ghana Police Service and the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances leading to the shooting.
