The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced a comprehensive intervention programme to address persistent power supply challenges in Kumasi and improve overall system reliability.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, April 20, 2026, Acting Managing Director, Ing. Kwame Kpekpena, outlined a series of short-, medium-, and long-term measures aimed at strengthening the power distribution network in the Ashanti Region.

As part of immediate interventions, ECG will install 300 distribution transformers to reduce load pressure and stabilize voltage in heavily affected areas. This effort will be supported by an intensified preventive maintenance programme to fix existing system defects responsible for frequent outages and power fluctuations.
In the medium term, the company has committed an investment of GH¢1.11 billion toward key network reinforcement projects. These initiatives are expected to expand capacity and enhance the resilience of the power distribution system.
Looking ahead, ECG also plans to construct a third Bulk Supply Point (BSP) in Kumasi. The project is intended to address structural limitations within the current power infrastructure while supporting the city’s growing electricity demand.
The intervention programme forms part of ECG’s broader strategy to ensure a more reliable and stable power supply to Kumasi, one of Ghana’s fastest-growing economic hubs.
