The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has contained a fire outbreak at the Kumasi Kejetia Market, preventing what could have escalated into a major disaster and saving goods worth hundreds of Ghana cedis.
The fire, which occurred on Monday, April 20, 2026, reportedly started in a shop dealing in matches. Firefighters responded promptly and brought the situation under control, limiting the damage to a single shop.
Although the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, the affected shop is said to have lost goods valued at hundreds of cedis.
Acting Managing Director of Kumasi City Market Limited, Ernest Afayam, confirmed that only one shop was impacted. He assured that management would intensify monitoring of traders to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
“We will continue to enforce the rules governing the market to prevent such incidents,” he stated.
President of the Federation of Kumasi Traders, Nana Kwasi Prempeh, commended the GNFS for their swift intervention, which he said helped avert extensive losses.
He also called on traders to remain vigilant and adhere to safety practices to prevent future outbreaks.
Meanwhile, the GNFS has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
