Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, Minister for the Interior, has called for sustained vigilance and proactive measures to prevent the spread of violent extremism into Ghana, despite the country’s reputation as a stable democracy in the sub-region.
Speaking after attending the Coastal States Stability Mechanism (CSSM) Senior-Level Talks on Enhancing Regional Security in Accra, the minister described Ghana as a “beacon of peace,” attributing its stability to deliberate leadership, coordinated strategies, and continuous investment in institutions and human development.
The high-level meeting brought together key stakeholders to strengthen coordinated efforts aimed at preventing violent extremism, with particular focus on northern Ghana, where emerging security threats require urgent attention.
The Asawase Member of Parliament (MP) emphasized the importance of improved collaboration, timely interventions, and effective service delivery to address underlying vulnerabilities that could expose communities to extremist influence.
While acknowledging Ghana’s relative peace, he cautioned that the country is not immune to the growing threat of terrorism in the West African sub-region, particularly from the Sahel. He stressed the need for sustained national commitment to prevent any potential spillover.
The dialogue was hosted by the International Organization for Migration under the CSSM initiative.
The Chief of Mission for IOM Ghana, Fatou Diallo Ndiaye, commended Ghana’s leadership in maintaining stability and strengthening its security framework, while reaffirming the organization’s support for national efforts.
Regional Ministers from the Upper East, Upper West, and Savannah regions also participated in the talks, highlighting ongoing interventions focused on strengthening state presence, improving service delivery, and building resilient communities in the face of socio-economic challenges.
The CSSM dialogue forms part of broader regional efforts to enhance cooperation and ensure long-term stability across coastal West Africa.
