The Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, has officially launched the second round of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action Fund, coinciding with global Earth Day celebrations.
The initiative, which is being simultaneously launched in 90 cities across five continents, aims to empower youth aged 15 to 24 to design and lead innovative climate action projects.
It follows Kumasi’s successful completion of Round 1 under the leadership of former Mayor Hon. Samuel Pyne.
Speaking at the launch event held at the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly premises, Mayor Boadi hailed the city’s continued participation in the international program as “an exciting step toward fostering a more sustainable future.”
“During Round 1, Kumasi received $50,000, which supported 14 youth groups and engaged 2,400 young people in climate-related projects,” he said.
“This time, we have secured $100,000, allowing us to double our impact and inspire even more youth-led innovation.”
Following a month-long call for proposals, the KMA received 54 applications from youth groups citywide.
A selection committee comprising technocrats, academics, and technical experts reviewed the submissions over a three-week period. As a result, 26 projects have been selected to receive microgrants ranging from $1,000 to $5,000, with implementation scheduled over the next six months.
Selected initiatives include: Plastic upcycling and briquette production, Composting programs in schools, A bamboo bicycle rental system for campuses, Eco-friendly plantain fiber packaging, A youth-led soap recycling project, Smart dustbin solutions and Tree-planting drives.
Mayor Boadi congratulated the winners and commended all applicants for their dedication to environmental stewardship.
He emphasized the importance of adhering to project timelines and working collectively to qualify for a potential third round of funding from Bloomberg Philanthropies.
He also reminded attendees that the launch coincided with World Earth Day, urging the public to reflect on their responsibility to protect the environment and support sustainable practices.
“The Round 2 of the KMA and Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action Fund is duly launched for implementation,” the Mayor declared.
“Let’s strive towards a greener and more sustainable future for the city of Kumasi.”
