President John Dramani Mahama has suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo following the establishment of a prima facie case in response to three separate petitions filed against her.
According to a statement issued by the Presidency Communications Office, the President acted in accordance with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State. A committee has been constituted to investigate the allegations contained in the petitions.
The five-member committee is chaired by Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang of the Supreme Court and includes:
- Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu, Justice of the Supreme Court
- Daniel Yaw Domelevo, former Auditor-General
- Major Flora Bazwaanura Dalugo of the Ghana Armed Forces
- Professor James Sefah Dzisah, Associate Professor at the University of Ghana
The committee’s mandate is to conduct a full inquiry into the allegations brought against the Chief Justice.
“In accordance with Article 146(10) of the Constitution and upon the advice of the Council of State, the President has, by a warrant, suspended the Chief Justice with immediate effect pending the outcome of the committee’s proceedings,” the statement said.
The announcement was signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications.
The petitions and their specific allegations have not yet been made public. This development marks a significant moment in Ghana’s judicial and constitutional affairs, as the country closely watches the process unfold.
