The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) have both sent high-level delegations to the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi to participate in the third-day Adua (Islamic prayers) for the late Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa-Naa Abubakari Mahama II.
The presence of the two major political parties at the solemn gathering reflected a show of respect and solidarity with the Dagbon Kingdom as traditional authorities, political leaders, religious bodies and citizens continue to mourn the passing of the revered monarch.
The NDC delegation was led by the party’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, and included the Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Ali Adolf John Mburidiba; National Vice Chairman, Chief Sofo Awudu Azorka; leadership of the Northern Caucus of the NDC Majority in Parliament; and Northern Regional executives of the party.
During the visit, Mr. Asiedu Nketia signed a book of condolence on behalf of the NDC, expressing the party’s sympathy and solidarity with the Royal Family, chiefs and people of Dagbon.
The delegation also joined mourners gathered at the Gbewaa Palace to offer prayers for the peaceful repose of the late Yaa-Naa and to pay their respects to the Dagbon Traditional Council.
The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) was also represented by a delegation mandated by its 2028 flag bearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The NPP team was led by the Member of Parliament for Karaga, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, and included former Northern Regional Minister Salifu Saeed, among other party representatives.
Dr. Amin Adam signed the book of condolence on behalf of the NPP and conveyed greetings and sympathies from Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to the Royal Family and the people of Dagbon.
The third-day Adua attracted thousands of mourners to the Gbewaa Palace, where special prayers were offered for the late Yaa-Naa Abubakari Mahama II and for continued peace and unity within the Dagbon Kingdom.
Yaa-Naa Abubakari Mahama II, who ascended the Dagbon Skin in January 2019, is remembered for his efforts to strengthen reconciliation, promote peaceful coexistence and preserve the customs and traditions of one of Ghana’s oldest traditional kingdoms.
