President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has formed a five-member ad hoc ministerial committee to engage stakeholders and evaluate the government’s efforts in combating illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
This move comes amid growing pressure from unions and associations calling for more decisive action to tackle the environmental and social harm caused by illegal mining activities.
In a statement released on Friday, September 13, Information Minister Fatimatu Abubakar announced that the National Security Minister, Albert Kan-Dapaah, will chair the committee.
He will be supported by four other ministers, who will work collaboratively to assess the government’s anti-galamsey initiatives and propose solutions to strengthen the fight against the menace.
Galamsey has become a major issue in recent years, with many stakeholders urging the president to declare a state of emergency to allow more focused efforts in addressing the problem.
The formation of this ministerial committee is seen as a step towards intensifying the government’s crackdown on illegal mining and its associated environmental destruction.
The committee is expected to engage key stakeholders and offer recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of measures aimed at curbing illegal mining.
The five-member committee is led by the, National Security Minister, Albert Kan-Dapaah. Other members of the committee are:
Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor, Minister for Defense, Dominic Nitiwul, Minister for Employment, Labour Relations and Pensions, Ignatius Baffour Awuah and Minister for information, Fatimatu Abubakar.
