President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s determination to combat illegal mining, acknowledging the protracted nature of the crisis while pledging sustained action to protect Ghana’s natural resources.
Speaking to a gathering of workers and union leaders, the President emphasized that the fight against galamsey-a local term for illicit small-scale mining-remains a top priority, despite its entrenched challenges.
“This battle cannot be won overnight, but surrender is not an option,” he declared, drawing applause from the crowd.
President Mahama candidly addressed the complexities of illegal mining, which has devastated forests, polluted water bodies, and undermined sustainable development.
“When I sought the presidency, I harbored no illusions about the difficulty of this fight. I did not promise a solution in four months, nor will I make empty guarantees now,” he stated.
The President stressed that systemic corruption, cross-border criminal networks, and economic pressures on vulnerable communities demand a multifaceted, long-term strategy.
“We are dealing with a hydra-headed menace that requires patience, innovation, and collective action,” he added.
President Mahama praised the efforts of Ghana’s security agencies, including the Armed Forces, in disrupting illegal mining operations and dismantling equipment used by perpetrators.
“Our gallant men and women in uniform are fully equipped and motivated to root out these destructive activities,” he said.
He warned that individuals and companies involved in galamsey would face the full force of the law, regardless of their political or social influence.
“No one is above accountability. We will pursue every illegal miner, financier, and collaborator,” he asserted.
The President urged citizens to view environmental protection as a shared responsibility, emphasizing that grassroots vigilance and community-led initiatives are critical to success.
“This is not just a government fight-it is Ghana’s fight. Report illegal miners, reject short-term gains, and stand firm for our land,” he implored.Sou: Kwadwo Owusu
