Suzzy Adwoa Pinamang, a second-year student at Adventist Senior High School in Bantama, has arrived in the United Kingdom to undergo emergency eye surgery after sustaining a serious injury from an accidental gunshot at school.
The teenager was flown to the UK on Saturday, May 10, accompanied by her brother, who is serving as her caregiver, and Rafik Mahama, special aide to businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama.
The Brother to the President of Ghana John Dramani Mahama is fully sponsoring Suzzy’s medical treatment and travel expenses.
Doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi and the Agarwal Eye Hospital in Accra diagnosed Suzzy with severe trauma to her eye, recommending immediate specialist intervention abroad to prevent further damage and to restore her vision.
The arrangement was made possible through the swift intervention of Mr. Mahama, whose timely support has ensured that Suzzy’s family bears no financial burden for the treatment.
Additional support came from Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and the British High Commissioner to Ghana, Her Excellency Harriet Thompson.
The issue was initially brought to their attention by Francis Asenso-Boakye, Member of Parliament for Bantama.
The minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa facilitated Suzzy’s visa processing and instructed the Ghana High Commission in the UK to extend consular assistance and special privileges to her during her stay.
These measures aim to ease her transition and ensure she receives the highest standard of medical and emotional support.
The case has drawn national attention and sparked conversations about student safety and access to emergency medical care.
Suzzy is expected to begin her treatment in the coming days.
