The Tamale Metropolis is undergoing significant road infrastructure expansion under government’s “Big Push” agenda, with several key road corridors currently under rehabilitation to improve urban mobility and economic activity.
Mayor of Tamale, Hon. Alhaji Adam Abubakari Takoro, disclosed this during the Assembly’s maiden stakeholder engagement and Town Hall Meeting held on 7 May 2026, under the Government’s “Accounting to the People” initiative.
The engagement, supervised by the Northern Regional Coordinating Council (NRCC), formed part of President John Dramani Mahama’s Resetting Agenda aimed at strengthening transparency and citizen participation in development.
According to the Mayor, major works are ongoing on the two principal ring roads linking the Industrial Area, Sagnarigu, King David, Taha and Yendi Barrier corridors.
“These ring roads are critical to easing congestion and improving the movement of goods and services within the metropolis,” Hon. Takoro stated.
He further disclosed that the 34-kilometre Target inner roads project has commenced following the resolution of earlier challenges related to demolition exercises.
Additional road works are also ongoing in Dabokpa, Gulkpeg-Tua, Gumbihini and Jakarayili communities, aimed at improving connectivity within densely populated urban areas.
The Mayor also noted that the District Roads Improvement Programme (DRIP) equipment has been deployed to open up new and existing roads in communities such as Lahagu, Gbewa Residential Area, Tuutingli and Chanshegu.
He acknowledged that some of the projects initially faced delays due to demolition requirements but assured residents that implementation is now progressing steadily.
Hon. Takoro emphasized that improved road infrastructure remains central to Tamale’s transformation as a major commercial hub in Northern Ghana, serving neighbouring Sahelian countries including Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and Northern Togo.
Speaking at the event on behalf of the Northern Regional Minister, Acting Chief Director of the Northern Regional Coordinating Council (NRCC), Mr. Sumaila Ewuntomah Abudu, commended the Assembly for keeping citizens informed on development projects.
He described infrastructure development as a key driver of economic growth and urged continued collaboration between government, traditional authorities and residents to sustain progress.
“The essence of this engagement is to strengthen the relationship between government and citizens through openness, accountability, and inclusive governance,” he said.
The stakeholder meeting brought together traditional leaders, assembly members, civil society organisations and residents, who welcomed updates on ongoing infrastructure projects and called for timely completion of road works to ease urban transportation challenges.
