Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng, a distinguished Ghanaian journalist, editor, and media advocate, has passed away at the age of 71.
His death marks the end of a remarkable career that spanned over four decades, during which he significantly influenced journalism and media regulation in Ghana and across Africa.
Beginning his journalism journey in 1982 as a staff writer for the Daily Graphic, Gyan-Apenteng quickly rose through the ranks to become the Foreign News Editor and later served as acting editor. He was also appointed editor of The Mirror, where he introduced enduring features that enriched the publication’s content.
Beyond his editorial roles, Gyan-Apenteng was a fervent advocate for media ethics and regulation.
He served as the Chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC), Ghana’s statutory media regulatory body, where he championed the passage of the Broadcasting Bill to ensure responsible media practices.
His commitment to media excellence extended to academia, where he lectured part-time at institutions such as the Ghana Institute of Journalism and the African University College of Communication in Accra.
He also held international teaching positions, including at Vauxhall College in London and the European University Centre for Peace Studies in Austria.
In addition to his roles in journalism and education, Gyan-Apenteng was a prolific writer and cultural commentator. He authored several publications and was known for his insightful columns that addressed pressing societal issues.
Gyan-Apenteng’s contributions to journalism were recognized both locally and internationally. He served as the President of the Ghana Association of Writers and was the immediate past President of the African Communication Regulators Network.
His passing is a significant loss to the media fraternity, and tributes have poured in from colleagues and institutions acknowledging his dedication to upholding journalistic integrity and freedom of expression.
